Management Functions
Management is a social progression which involves the accountability for monetary and effectual planning plus the guideline of operation of a business in the execution of a given function. Management process is said to be dynamic where it consists different elements and actions in reverence to marketing, purchase of products and finance among others. Therefore, management consists of four basic functions which are involved in carrying out of the business activities which include: planning on objectives, organizing different structures, directing towards achievement of goals and controlling function so as to be within the intended standards (Erasmus, Ferreira, Groenewald, & Ngcobo, 2004). The following discussion is therefore inclusive of the four functions used in the management for the attainment of organization goals and maintenance of competitive advantage.

Planning functions engrosses on setting of objectives while at the same time, determining an itinerary of action which is supposed to help in achieving these objectives. It is an important function in helping the managers to reach the organizational goals and maintain competitive functions as they are able to focus on the environmental conditions which might be facing an organization thus being in a position to forecast future circumstances. The forecast helps the managers to look on various ways so as to cope with the presumed circumstances. Through planning, the manager is then in a position to analyze internal as well as the external factors affecting an enterprise thus maintaining competitive advantage through strategic planning.
Organizing is considered as the second function in the management process. Through organization, various resources are systematically put into place an act which is performed before the actual practice of the action course. The manager is then in a position to meet the organizational goals through assigning of the required resources in carrying out of the business activities (Pride, Hughes, & Kapoor, 2009). He is also able to maintain the competitive advantage though staff harmonization such that important tasks are best handled for best production in maintaining competition.
Directing plays a third role in the management function. It involves the aspects of good communication, motivations strategies, and maintenance of the discipline required for job performance. This function helps the manager to control while at the same time supervise all the activities which are carried by the staff for the attainment of the organization goals. Managers’ uses directive geared incentives in the improvement of the staff performance which in turn promote attainment of organizational goals and promotion of competitive advantage when the organization performance is improved.
Controlling is taken to be the fourth basic function involved in management. It involves the founding of performance principles which must focus on the already set objectives. The manager uses this function in solving the experienced performance problems thus maintenance of the enterprise standards which helps in attaining the organization goals. He therefore maintains the competitive advantage through recognizing any supplementary developing problems and development of corrective action. In conclusion, the four primary functions are used as a means of controlled plan in management over the precautionary measure (Pride, Hughes, & Kapoor, 2009).
