Training Methods

Employee development and career development through training is one of the most important activities that should be undertaken by every organization. This is because training has significant and long lasting positive impacts as far as the success and effectiveness of the workforce is concerned.  Likewise, the key objective of training is to improve production of products and services, ensure better worker behavior, and equip the employees with critical information that pertains to their job descriptions. Initially, the organization is required to identify the areas of concern among its workforce that need training and development and then seek to find the best training methods that fully suit the particular needs. Afterwards, the organization will create a suitable program for the training, ways on how best to execute it, and then later evaluate to see whether it will be able to meet the objective of the organization for training.

Case method

This method involves the use of real situations that are useful in facilitating discussion and analysis during training. The method is usually successful if the trainees are active enough to use their listening and thinking skills on audio tapes, video-tape, and an oral description. Moreover, many organizations prefer this method because it is less costly and it provides indirect experience through a particular situation.

On the job Training

This involves training and developing an employee’s abilities and skills while he or she is actually working. This method really works since an employee is able to gain a skill in the process of executing the daily chores in a workplace (Armstrong, 2000). Generally, this method works well given that the employee is able to encounter the challenges they face as they work and therefore this method helps them to learn in their normal working conditions.

Role-playing

This method involves a program where the employees rehearse specific activities and situations in preparation for their roles at the workplace (Dessler 2005). It helps in nurturing an employee’s abilities and skills before embarking to the real practice in the organization. This is more useful in the educational sector, media, and technical organizations where one has to practice handling certain machines.

In Basket Method

This is one of the most practical methods used by organizations, which helps in equipping employees in their newly appointed positions through presenting complicated cases concerning their new roles. The technique is useful since it gives the employees an opportunity to handle cases, which relate to what they will handle after taking up new jobs.

Behavior modeling

Generally, this method is based on the principles of social-learning theory. It involves getting the employees in an organization through a process where they learn from others’ experiences. The learners observe others as they act and then learn how to the same things by watching.

Outdoor Training

This is one of the most unique methods of employee training and development where the employees are taken external training sessions outside the organization. This method involves workshops where the employees can learn innovative skills and abilities through self-awareness forums and seminars.

Coaching and counseling

It is true that every employee has the capacity to grow in his or her area of specialization. Therefore, coaching and counseling is one of the successful methods of training employees and making them best performers. A manager coaches and instructs them on innovative ideas in their field, which thus maximizes their individual effectiveness.

Transitory Anticipatory experiences

Human beings usually have a tendency to respond with a state of anxiety when anticipating particular circumstances. For instance, this occurs when an employee is waiting for a promotion and therefore the organization has to develop a strategy of psychologically preparing employees for new positions or task (Armstrong, 2000). The method is very effective since it helps the employees perform their current responsibilities better, reduce anxiety and turnover, and developing realistic goals.

Transfers and job rotations

This is a common method especially in the corporate world where the skills and abilities can be required in another department in an organization and thus the employee is transferred to solve that need. Moreover, it may involve rotating the employees in the various departments or different organizations in a vast geographical region. The method is useful in helping the workers learn several aspects of working.

Lecture-Discussion Approaches

Different employees have different beliefs, attitudes, principles, background knowledge and they can even read a material and interpret it differently. Therefore, this method enables employees to come together in open discussions where they are able to share views and develop their personal and group skills and abilities (Armstrong, 2000). The employees are taught in lecturer sessions discuss on what they have learned.

Computers, Virtual Reality Approaches and Distance Training

Following the recent technological advancements, it has become possible for an organization to train its employees through accessing necessary information in the internet. Employees do no longer need to attend a traditional setting of a workshop but instead can acquire new skills and knowledge through the web or other network technologies following the recent advancements in e-learning.

Goal setting

This is a very critical method in training and ensuring that the employees are effective through setting formal goals and objectives, which the employees are supposed to achieve within a given time (Dessler 2005). It enables the employees to be focused and ensure the realization of the future.

Behavior modification

This method comprises in training employees in organizations with the objective of helping them to function more effectively in the workplace. This is achieved by teaching them critical techniques, which are necessary in improving individuals’ covert and overt behaviors in order to help them become more efficient.

Team Building

The success of any organization demands that its employees embrace teamwork. Therefore, team building involves activities and strategies like retreats and other social activities for the purpose of bonding and helping the employees to build their personal relationships as team members. This results into self-development, positive communication, and the ability to work together as one.

Conclusion

The organization should be very careful during the trainings so that the trainers are not limited from benefiting from the training by avoidable constraints. Likewise, there are unforeseen constraints that may hinder the training process. Furthermore, the organization may be forced to execute the basic methodology and other simpler techniques in achieving the same objective of training and development.
