Mental Health Superior Court

I. Description of case presented that interested you.
I observed was a hearing for a young man who was brought in looking anxious and restless. He was hospitalized two days ago with psychosis and homicidal ideation and he did not want to stay in the hospital anymore, he wanted to return home.
In the court room were present
1. Doctor as a witness on his case. The doctor testified that this guy is not able to return home since he still needs treatment. Then he explain what circumstances lead to hospitalize the young man. Here is a story:
Late evening patient’s father called to police because he was scared by behavior of his son. The young man listen to loud music, run around the house, screaming and threatening to kill someone. When police came he started arguing with police resulting in he was detained and taken to hospital. There he was diagnosed with acute psychosis and the treatment was started. The patient get certain antipsychotic and responded good to the treatment. However, the doctor wanted to hold him more days since relapse took a place the day before court, also patient’s father did not want he return home he was scared.
2. The patient insisted that he is ready to return home. However, all his behavior indicated the opposite. He seemed more euphoric than hostile or depressed, which seemed inappropriate compared to the serious attitude of the surrounding courtroom. He stated ”I want to return home, I am not crazy and do not want that someone spit on me there. I am not crazy, I have a problem with sever, sever, sever anger. But now I feel better and want to live with my father.” When the judge asked him why he got angry his answer was “because my father and other members of family madden me”.
3. The court discussed days of maximum hold. His appeal was denied. The judge began stating information, including the ability to involuntary medicate, to the client. The client tried to sit still and watch the judge for the first few seconds but then became increasingly distracted, initiating conversation with his attorney or leaning to see other people in the court room. He interrupted the judge a few times to loudly ask a question or start talking about his illness.
