In the first part of the assignment you will produce a close reading of ONE of the following extracts of modernist writing. Length 1000 words. You need to pay close attention to the experiments in form shown here, but also connect such innovations to the wider understanding of modernism you have developed during the module. You should also draw upon secondary research on the text. You must situate your reading of the passage within the context of the rest of the text e.g. where does this passage occur? How does it relate to the rest of the text? What is its particular significance in relation to the text as a whole?

In the second part of the essay you must focus upon ONE modernist magazine covered in the second part of the module and assess how it contributed to the development of modernism. Word length 1500 words. As with your dissertations it is up to you to devise your own question or topic tutorials will help you to do this. You can, for example, concentrate upon the work of one writer or artist (e.g. Pound in Poetry; Joyce in The Little Review), or consider how a single key issue is treated (e.g. the emergence of free verse in Poetry magazine; war in The New Age; feminism and anarchism in The Little Review).
