Supplementary Guidelines for Paper #3
• The chosen theme should be well-defined. For your definition of the chosen theme, you should consult either the required readings or the list of supplementary sources to be provided by the instructor.
• The chosen cultural/geographical area(s) should be described.
• The relevant musical genre(s) should be described.
• If you choose to address your theme by comparing different genres from different cultural/geographical areas, you should offer brief background information on each.
• An original argument (or a succinct synthesis of existing arguments) about the relationship(s) between popular music and your chosen theme should be stated clearly and addressed consistently throughout the paper. Claims must be supported by evidence from the readings.
• You must use a minimum of two course readings plus one outside source, but you are not limited to three sources; you may use additional sources (books or articles, not websites), as long as you meet the initial requirement.
• Paper must be formatted as stated above and use the standard reference citation style preferred by your TA.
