Nursing and Patient Care

Write a paper (1,500-2,000 words) in which you analyze and appraise each of the (15) articles identified in Topic 1. Pay particular attention to evidence that supports the problem, issue, or deficit, and your proposed solution.

Hint: The Topic 2 Readings provide appraisal questions that will assist you to efficiently and effectively analyze each article.

Refer to “Sample Format for Review of Literature,” “RefWorks,” and “Topic 2: Checklist.”

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Tips for Review of Literature Assignment

You will be addressing these 4 items for each article:

  • Summary of Article:

  • Research Elements: Design, Methods, Population, Strengths, Limitations:

  • Outcome(s): Research Results:

  • Significance to Nursing and Patient Care:

Here are 3 examples of how you can layout the information for the Review of Literature assignment in module 2. The literature review instructions mention to write 1-2 paragraphs under each of the 4 items you need to respond to, but keep the paragraphs short to help stay close to the word count. Do this for each of the 15 articles.

Method 1:

Alsaleh, F. M., Smith, F. J., & Taylor, K. M. (2012). Experiences of children/young people and     their parents, using insulin pump therapy for the management of type 1 diabetes:           qualitative review. Journal of Clinical Pharmacy & Therapeutics, 37(2), 140-147.

The authors of this study carried out an extensive literature search that focused on families’ perceived benefits/disadvantages to use of insulin pumps for glycemic control in children.

Only six studies met this inclusion criteria: two studies chronicling the experiences of just the parents, one study depicting only the children’s perspective, and three studies encompassing both perspectives. Pubmed, Cochrane Library and EMBASE were used for research purposes.

In the studies involving just the parents, the general consensus for the move to insulin pump therapy was the possibility of better glycemic control. Coincidentally, the majority of these parents were first introduced to the pump by nurse practitioners. In the study limited to just the children, Hba1c levels drastically improved and they noted improved quality of life. One deterrent, however, was the visibility of the pump. In the three studies involving both parents and children, the general consensus was that the pump improved glycemic control, offered more opportunities for socialization with peers, and reduced fears of needles and pokes. Limitations of these studies include small sample sizes, the inability of children under six to answer any questions, and the “child-only” study consisted only of females.

This study has implications for nursing practice. In all six studies, glycemic control improved after commencing pump therapy. The nurse can use this information when interacting with children and parents who are “on the fence” about transitioning from multiple injection therapy. Additionally, nurses can inform children and parents about the opportunities for improved quality of life and a significant reduction in the number of daily pokes and injections.

Method 2:

Alternatively, you can set up your literature review as in the sample format which will also work:

Cioffi, J., Purcal, N., & Arundell, F. (2005). A pilot study to investigate the effect

of a simulation strategy on the clinical decision making of midwifery students.

Journal of Nursing Education, 44(3), 131-134.

Method 3:

Use the following template language and simply fill in the blanks for each article. If some text does not apply, as in the case of a non-research article, just do some editing.

This article was about ________________. The research study used population A and used a _________ (qualitative/quantitative) design. The strengths of this study were__________________________however it had the following limitations________________________. The results of the study showed_________________________ and were significant to nursing and patient care because_____________________.
