Observance of norms and potentially behaviors that deviate from the norm

Key Words: African American, Society, Segregation,

Social Setting: African American

African Americans up to date act as recipients of racial segregation despite entitled to numerous rights contrary to the Jim Crow’s era. Jim’s then perception towards African Americans is still evident to date among some whites, hence prompting almost the entire society continue to wallow in abject paucity. This has prompted some of them especially the young people who drop out of schools result to irresponsible behaviors like prostitution (Odom & Vernon-Feagans, 2010). African American setting face varied and serious setbacks regardless of numerous resources mobilized by social workers to help underprivileged people in the congested regions. According to Odom and Vernon-Feagans study, maternal depression in these regions acts as an indicator of utter segregation, which they normally undergo on daily basis.

However, parents in this societal settings normally encourage their children to embrace good morals, which they deem will enable them succeed in life regardless of residing in extremely underprivileged regions (Rhonda & Johnson, 2012). Hence, advocating prosocial involvement strategy considered to aid young people to develop behaviors that will contribute to the wellbeing of their respective African American communities (Rhonda & Johnson, 2012). However, this strategy based on the studies so far contacted seems to have a direct relation to other essential societal factors, which include racial centrality and segregation. This renders the implementation of prosocial involvement strategy extremely complex in ensuring adequate observance of societal norms (Rhonda & Johnson, 2012).

African Americans society like any other underprivileged groups normally experiences augmented rates of moral decay (Maxwell, 2013). Based on Justice Statistics as relayed by Maxwell’s study, youths in this society have turned into forming vicious teenage gangs. Mainly, these gangs comprise school dropouts due to their parents lacking the necessary resources meant to sustain them in educational system. The other reason is due to laxity on the part of some parents whereby most of them are addicts or criminals.
