Observation
The Collins English Dictionary defines observation as that act of viewing an occurrence for some specific purpose. Observing is more than just seeing and goes ahead to incorporate all the other human senses; smell, touch, sound and hearing. Different people observe for different reasons, for example, people observe and record in order to help them understand themselves and their world better. Others observe for research purposes while others observe so as to confirm a particular assumption and derive precise conclusions.
I have a tendency of observing the things around me and the events that happen around me whenever I find myself idle or waiting for somebody or an event. I have developed a keen interest on observing people, especially the way they dress, their attitudes, behavior, conversation with other people, facial features and body language. My keen interest is on their mode of dressing, on how the dressing trends differ from the children, teens and adults. I have observed this on many occasions while in a restaurant and I noted that kids have no particular trend of dressing. The teens wear more of faded jeans and T-shirts, with ladies being skimpily dressed while the adult men wear mostly cotton shirts and trousers, and a few wear suits, with the women on loose fitting skirts and blouses. I also observed that the occasion played a significant role in people’s dressing habits, as one would dress differently when going to the office as he would have dressed when on a social event. I observed people’s behavioral characteristics and how they relate to other people regarding their gender and age. I have noted that majority of the people react differently when in a given social circle, for instance teenagers behave politely amidst adults than when with fellow teenagers.
I also developed a habit of observing events and how particular ages of people relate to the various events and the choice of venue for those particular events. I observed that most teenagers associate with social events that occur during the weekends. Some of the social events the youth frequently attend are sporting events and the Friday nights out. The majority of the adults frequently attend the career workshops and conferences organized by religious institutions, and if they are on a social event, most likely it is a family fun day. This clearly draws the boundaries between the teens and adults in terms of their social life. It can be observed that teens always tend to associate with fellow teenagers since they want to explore their youthful life.
On many occasions when I am free or waiting for someone, I like to observe places; the kind of buildings in a given place, the class of people residing in that area, the geographical orientation and the various social places in the area. I also like to observe the various car models, noting the new brands that people are driving and the brand that is owned by most people and vice versa. I also like observing the weather and noting its impact on the days’ activities, how it influences peoples dressing habits. My observation interest further extends to the birds. I watch the various kinds of birds and note their feeding habits and emigrational habits.
Generally, observation involves a choice of a particular subject or object. It helps to draw conclusions and sometimes can be used to confirm assumptions that were not yet affirmed. Good observing habits entail looking at almost all aspects of your subject or object before drawing a viable conclusion. It also involves clearly defining your purpose of the observation and making sure that your objectives are achieved. A correct interpretation can only be achieved if the observation was done correctly. One of the benefits of using observation as a means of drawing conclusion is one is able to see what is being done, and the information obtained is reliable. Some of the drawbacks is that some tasks or people may not be in the manner they are watched.
