Here is the procedure just post it on the report :
Obtained 0.1996 g for determination one, and 0.200g mixture of napthalene, benzoic acid, and ethyl-4-aminobenzoate in a conical vial.
Dissolved the mixture by adding 2.5 mL of methylene chloride.
Transferred the mixtured into a small tube.
Add 2.5 mL of NaOH to remove the benzoic acid from the organic layer.
Using a pipet, the organic layer was transferred in two a second tube.
2.5 mL of HCL were added to the tube containing benzoic acid, the mixture was then filtered using a Hirsch funel, allowed to dry, and the the melting point was obtained using a Thomas-Hoover Apparatus.
2.5 mL of HCL were added to the tube containing the organic compound inorder to seperate napthalene from ethyl-4-aminobenzoate. Using a pipet, the Napthalene layer was extracted via a pipet and transferred to a clean dry test tube.
2.5 mL of NaOH where added to the test tube containing ethyl-4-aminobenzoate, since no precipate formed, the mixture was placed in a hot bath to dry the excess liquid. The melting point was not obtained (undetermined)
The test tube containing the napthalene was also place in a hot bath until it evaporated.
The hot bath was allowed to cool at room temperature, the solids were disposed in the appropriately marked “Solid Waste Container”.
