Read The Old Man and the Sea. Decide if you think it is a simple fishing story, a religious allegory, or a secular humanist epic.
Write a 1500- to 2,000-word paper (6-10 pages) defending your position with specific quotations from the book.
Format your paper consistent with MLA guidelines (title page, in-text citations and works cited page).
You need to have a minimum of 4 sources (one being the novel)

this is what I did for a rough draft. This is the corrected version with teacher notes. I have put quotation marks around his comments.

The story of \”The Old Man and the Sea\” by Ernest Hemingway is a story about an old man named Santiago who has to overcome many obstacles in his time at sea and in life. Things seem to always go wrong for him because, he started out going fishing for some dinner, when he caught the biggest marlin ever\’\’ (is this why things went wrong for him?)\’\’. It pulled him out in the bay of Cuba. After he was pulled all the way out, his hands hurt and he couldn\’t risk going to sleep because of sharks. When the sharks finally attacked, they ate his fish, which made him sad because he knew that no one would believe him when he told everyone about the size of the marlin. Santiago is the main character in The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway has made him out to be a hero who is full of courage and faith. \’\’Comma splice. You need to make your thesis clearer. It sounds as though you are saying this novel is a secular humanist epic but you need to specifically state this.\’\’
The boats represent the people in life. most of the boats/ people are silent. They stay within the areas they know are safe and almost always use caution not to upset the life that they have made for themselves. Hemingway is saying that most people don\’t raise a commotion, they just allow life to happen to them. In this story, the old man is testing his limits, he is challenging the ocean, and rowing where he wants to go, not where the ocean wants to take him.\’\’ Use specific evidence. How does this relate to the thesis statement of a secular humanist epic? You will want to define secular humanism in the thesis if that is your choice\’\’.
Santiago is full of pride and honor, which he thinks makes him invincible. He is a very proud man. He brags about the things that he wishes he as, like fish. He does not have this at home but he brags that he does. He would rather remain hungry than feel ashamed. He, Santiago faces a lot of risks by going out way too far. When he catches the marlin he is trying to justify his pride and self-reliance. He gives credit to the fish, even calling it his brother because of the strength and endurance of this marlin. \’\’ Again, you need specific evidence from outside sources. You also need to tie this back to your thesis\’\’.
The relationship of Santiago (the old man) and Manolin (the young boy) is a story of friendship and love. Santiago always treats Manolin as equal, besides the fact that he is only a boy. The old man wants to teach the boy about independence, in contrast to other fishermen whom Manolin went to fish with treats him as a child. We can see Manolin\’s concerns for the old man, taking care of everything, water for the old man, the soap and towels. Santiago tells us about three things that are brothers: the fish and the two hands.\’\’ I am not seeing the connection to the thesis or the point of this paragraph\’\’.
Santiagos courage, faith and endurance makes us all want to be the best we can be. Our battle that we have in life are usually far and few between. This story shows that you never lose the fight if you never give up!
