Assessment criteria: tutors will take into account the marking grid for M level work and SEEC descriptors.
Assessment briefing: You will need to select an article relevant to your chosen research question. The research question orientates and guides your work. Formulating a clear research question will enable you to critically review your chosen article in a way that demonstrates an understanding according to the specified criteria in the Marking Grid [Appendix 1]. Just as tutors will not choose your research question, they will not select an article for you to review. However, in the interests of consistency and ensuring the articles are appropriate for post-graduate study; you are advised to critique an article from the following journals available from the university databases.
The Journal of the Operational Research Society, British Journal of Psychology, Journal of Higher Education – Policy & Management, International Journal of Project Management, Journal of Applied Econometric s, Journal of Strategic Marketing, Journal of Management Studies, Organization, Organization and Management Theory, Human Resource Management Journal, International Journal of Human Resource Management, British Journal of Industrial Relations, Human Relations, Tamara, Personnel Review, Human Resource Development International.
The critical review is your first tentative step towards your research proposal and ultimately your DISSERTATION
Allocation of marks: taking into account masters level work marks will be allocated for this assessment according to Appendix 1.
NB; Appendix I recognises that different students will choose topics and refer to literature on topics relevant to their programme and discipline, for example, for students enrolled on the MAHRM their choice of topic relates to human resource management and students on the MBA to general management. Students on the Finance Masters are quite different to that mentioned above. They will have to consider a pure finance – related issue for the purpose of their research. Although this does not preclude students from crossing disciplines. That is to say those MBA students may select a topic relevant to International Business Management; HRM students must choose a topic directly relevant to HRM. If you have any concerns about the appropriateness of your topic please speak to your tutor. All research papers intended for assignment – 1 must be given to the module leader for approval. We have certain topics and dimensions associated with each research pool. The research pools are: Finance, Strategy & Ethics, HRM, Operations & Supply Chain, Marketing, Project Management and finally, Econometrics.
Timing of feedback: Formative peer and tutor feedback in week five if presented and final feedback in accordance with university regulations.
