Sudeep Reddy is an economic analyst with the wall street journal. His article Lagarde says IMF will heal emerging economies appeared on the wall street journal series on June 24, 2011. The article is on the interview of Christine Lagarde, the French minister for finance and candidate for the post of the president of the International monetary fund, which has so far fallen vacant. It focuses on the promises of the candidate to make tough decisions on the crisis facing the Euro and promises loyalty to the organization it highlights her achievement and the nations supporting her candidature and her main opponent.
IMF is an intergovernmental organization that deals with the world financial system. The organization is looking for a chief executive to lead the organization. A leader is a person who can motivate one to work towards accomplishment of the organizational goal and the optimization of the available resources depending on the leadership style employed. The leadership style and the likely result and the changes likely to happen as a result of the new leadership should be looked to analyze her potentials and possible improvement of the world body. The style includes autocratic where the chief executive has all the power and makes all the decisions, the employees are expected to obey all the decisions made by the leader without questioning. This style reduces chances of innovation and creativity among the employees. If it’s employed by the new leader of IMF then this can hinder the companies’ growth and affect the companies’ effort to solve the Euro, it results in dissatisfaction and it does not exploit the talents and skills of the employees. Democratic leadership is evident where the power of decision-making is shared among the top managers and the employees.
The employees feel appreciated and their ideals are being considered in decision-making hence motivating them to work and increasing productivity. Besides the style of leadership adopted she will have to apply other tributes of a leader. She needs to be warm and friendly towards the employees so that they can interact freely and share ideas and for here to run the operations and the culture of the organization. Learning the culture of the organization will help her to settle down and make the necessary changes for the best interest of the organization. She also needs to be innovative in order to help the organization in resolving the Euro crisis and addressing issues on the macro economic issues facing its member countries.
She also has the duty to create a health work environment where all the persons working relate to each other and the outside world well. This promotes cooperation and unity at the workplace and everyone feels that his contribution is appreciated. Incase members have problems on their personal life they free share and help each other out. The leader should lead by example and should be hardworking and committed to the organization.
In view of the above, Christine Lagarde has the responsibility of leading the IMF and helps solve the current crisis without conflict of interest if appointed. She also needs to apply leadership style that will benefit the company and have the leadership traits that promote good relation with the employees and the outside world.
