PAPER #2: CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION: VULNERABILITY, PREVENTION, AND REINTEGRATION

Sexual exploitation of a minor is a pretty broad category of crimes with children as victims. This includes crimes such as child prostitution, sex trafficking of minors, and child pornography. Chapter 7 in the Terry text provides a good orientation to the subject in general, but students will need to go forth and research the topic further in order to complete this paper. You may not use the text as a source. For the purposes of this paper, select a specific type of crime for the topic of your paper (please don’t try to cover several different varieties of exploitation – you need to focus on ONE type). PLEASE DO NOT SELECT SEXTING – as self-produced pornography, it does not lend itself to the parameters of this particular assignment and will result in SIGNIFICANT POINT DEDUCTIONS if you do use it as your paper topic.Address the following elements in your paper:• Discuss at least two (2) factors that make a child more vulnerable to this type of exploitation? For example, why would an offender select this particular child v. some other child?• Provide at least two (2) strategies that could prevent this type of victimization from occurring.• Finally, describe at least two (2) strategies for reintegrating these victims back into the community. For example, what do we do with these child victims to help them move forward from the experience of exploitation?Papers need to focus on one specific type of crime (e.g., child prostitution, child sex trafficking, child pornography) rather than the entire category in general (which is too broad).Papers should be divided into thirds, with one third of the paper addressing each of the required elements – the paper should not focus on one element moreso than the others.Remember that the paper must not only demonstrate your understanding of the topic, but your ability to do research. Sources must be recent, peer-reviewed journal articles – those that are academic in nature, although news articles are acceptable. Blogs, websites with no academic or review process, and wiki sources ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Recent sources are those published within the past 10 years or so (or thereabouts). The course textbook may not be used as a source.
