Personal Experience
Introduction
In the year 2009, I had one of the most horrific experiences in my life. I never thought that somebody could come close to dying that easily. Moreover, I never thought that stomachaches could be so painful. The events that followed when I had a stomachache became so horrific that I remember them clearly, as if it was yesterday. In the event of the stomachache, I almost died in the hands of my family and the doctors.
Discussion
It was in September 20, 2009 11.00 P.M after we had a late supper at my cousin’s house where I had gone to visit him for the school holidays. I remember very well because I was the one who cooked the meal. It was spaghetti and meatballs. We ate the meal slowly as we were discussing about how the day was. I had gone to visit him so that I could help him in his electronic shop. I told him how the business was quite slow but things were not that bad. During the meal, I joked how the stomach cannot harm that much not unless I was a woman who was in labor.
Immediately after finishing the meal, I took the dishes to the kitchen and I started washing them. Since they were not many, I managed to finish them quickly and I went in to the living room. Even though I was a bit tired from the day’s work, I was able to sit down and watch one movie. The movie was “Blue Streak” by Martin Lawrence. I remember this movie because it is one of my favorites and I had watched it more than ten times and still I could not get bored from watching it. After watching the movie for about ten minutes, my stomach started aching. At first, I did not tell my cousin because I thought it was not very serious.
The stomachache persistently continued without stopping. At that point, I told my cousin about the stomachache and immediately he warmed some water for me to drink. He asked me whether we could go to the nearby clinic but I refused by telling that it was not that serious. No sooner had he finished warming the water than the pain escalated to another level. I was not able to sit down neither was I able to lie down. When I stood up, I only wanted to lie down but it did not help me in any way since I was unable to sit or lie down. My cousin gave me the cup of warm water and some painkillers. As soon as I drunk the water together with the painkillers, I immediately vomited them out.
It was at this time that I begged my cousin to take me to the hospital. Instantly, my cousin called a taxi so that they could take me to the nearby clinic. When we reached the clinic, it was around quarter past midnight. The nurses took me to the emergency room as I waited for the doctors to see me. By the time the doctor was coming, the nurse had already injected me with painkillers. As the doctor was attending to me, I explained to him where the pain was. It was in the upper stomach near my chest. Without further ado, the doctor suggested that I was suffering from ulcers and immediately he prescribed some medicine, which the nurse gave me.
Despite all this efforts, the pain did not go away but instead it continued to increase. I started vomiting the meal that I had already eaten for supper almost the same way as it was. The doctor suggested that I should be admitted for observation as they perform more tests on me so that they could establish what was happening to me. As they were performing the different tests on me, the different painkillers that the nurses had injected me took the better part of me and I slept. I did not speak for long and in about thirty minutes, I woke up back to the excruciating pain from my stomach.
I found myself in one of the rooms in the clinic and it was dark. There was nobody in the room. There was a switch at my bedside to switch on the lights. I switched on the lights and saw another switch with the sign of a bell for calling the nurses for help. I pressed and one of the nurses came running to my assistance. I told her that the pain was still their and I was very weak. This was due to the lack food in my system and the painkillers that I was injected with were very strong. She put me on drip and injected me with some medicine, which put me back to sleep.
I woke up early in the morning the next day at around six and still the pain was there. My parents and my two sisters were in the room waiting for me to wake up. The doctors had not yet found what was wrong with my stomach despite the different tests they had performed on me. The doctors suggested that I should be taken to the nearest hospital; there, they were to perform better tests. After some few minutes before I was transferred to the hospital, I remembered that one day I had wished to be carried by an ambulance to the hospital. It ran into my head and I begged God for forgiveness because one may never be to sure for what he or she has wished for. When they were transferring me to the hospital with the ambulance, I became mentally ill due to the pain that was in my stomach. As my cousin, my parents and my sisters explained to me after the experience that I became abusive and at one point, I started telling them goodbye because I was going to die.
Immediately, on reaching the hospital the doctors took me directly to the theatre for an operation. In the hospital, the doctors had already known what was happening to me after seeing the results, which were done in the clinic. In the theatre after the operation was done, I was not able to wake up and I was taken to the intensive care unit. My body did not have enough energy and I had lost a lot of blood during the operation. It was at this point that everybody thought that I had died. The doctor told my parents that if I were not going to wake up in the next six hours, I was not going to wake up again.
After five hours and thirty minutes, everybody thought that now I was never going to wake up again. Funeral arrangements had already started the only thing that was left remaining was for the full six hours to end, as my cousin had narrated to me. In mind, I felt as if I was in a very deep sleep because I was not thinking and neither was I dreaming. When it was about fifteen minutes to the full six hours, the doctor allowed my family to see me and say their last goodbyes before I died. My sisters were the first to enter followed by my cousin and my parents. They were each giving their last speeches before the doctor decided to switch off the life support machine.
Six minutes remaining to the full six hours, I woke up from the sleep and everybody was surprised to see me awake as they saw this as a miracle. Although I never knew what was happening, my cousin narrated either the whole ordeal that I had forgotten or the part where they had started making funeral arrangements. This gave me a clear picture of what was happening. Everybody was happy in the hospital including staff and the doctors. I felt as if God had granted me with a new beginning in life.
Conclusion
Before the experience, I never thought that a person could die easily or come close to death as I did. Additionally, I never thought that a little stomachache could escalate into such an excruciating pain that would eventually lead to surgery. Moreover, I never knew that a person should be careful with what they wished for because it can turn out to be very bad. On the other hand, after the experience I started appreciating each day that God has granted me because it is a privilege to be alive. In addition, I learned that the stomach is one of the most important organs in the body if it was to stop functioning, nothing would continue from happening until somebody healed. In conjunction, I learned that a stomachache is not something that should be taken for granted. Lastly, I have come to appreciate everybody especially my family, due to the support that they gave me all through the ordeal.
