One of my most rated and a valued virtue is honesty. As a child, I remember my parents constantly quoting and teaching various quotes on honesty. A famous quote imprinted in me since an early age is “oh what a tangled web we weave when we first learn to deceive.” I was constantly taught and later observed the way of the deceiver is hard. I have endeavored to uphold honesty since am convinced dishonesty is founded in fear of losing one’s image or reputation. I have integrated the virtue while concentrating on my passions such as music where I play two musical instruments – violin and piano- while learning the guitar. Additionally, I have been drawn towards community services where I have regularly enrolled in a cerebral palsy center, volunteered for the YMCA fund raising activities such as dancing and done first aid for school events while in Red Cross. Honesty has proved to be protective and liberating in all aspects.
One of my most memorable dilemmas involved upholding integrity at the expense of severing my relationship with someone I really admired. My inclination towards caring for children diagnosed with cerebral palsy was inspired by my best friend who has an ailing elder sister. She regularly enrolled in the program to help in the therapy from an early age and I would tag along ultimately my empathy was evoked. I enjoyed helping the therapists in the games especially given the occasional reflections of joy in the children who were normally estranged from families due to the condition. Our frequent visits led to a very cordial relationship with the officer in charge of the institution who regularly affirmed us and with time, our admiration for his work grew.
The institution sheltered eighteen children and had three officers inclusive of the head officer. Consequently, they relied heavily on volunteers to ease the work of the two nurses who took shifts in regards to day and night. Having volunteered frequently, we were aware of various needs such as wheel chairs, medication and medical accessories that were needed. Essentially, wheel chairs were need given the ratio was one wheel chair to two patients. The institution eventually caught a break when a religious organization furnished it with twenty wheel chairs. Unfortunately, the wheel chairs meant for children who had progressed forms of cerebral palsy never arrived at the institution in spite the excitement they had triggered in us working at the institute.
After three weeks of hushed silence and anticipation on the issue, it became clear the wheel chairs would not be arriving despite the growing need. The nurses were scared to make an enquiry to the religious organization since they would jeopardize their employment or the welfare of the children. We were four volunteers at the time and we decided to contact the religious donors only to find out the wheel chairs were released to the custody of the officer in charge. Further investigations revealed he had started a clandestine institution that was profit oriented taking care of children with cerebral palsy. Consequently, he had channeled most donations to it at the expense of the community based non-profit program. This put my counterparts and me at great odds with him since we had alerted the donor who raised enough attention to warrant an investigation into the head officer. Honesty and courage on our part as volunteers had resulted to improved conditions for the children since the wheel chairs and preceding donations where channeled back to the institution. This experience further imprinted the importance of integrity as protective to those around as well as me.
