Overview of the Article
In the descriptive article titled Nurse Practitioner Special Interest Groups: Effective or Not Tori Kathleen and Morley Elizabeth discusses the research project conducted with the nurse practitioner (NP) in regional Victoria. The purpose of the article was to assess the effectiveness of the Nurse Practitioner Special Interest Groups in meeting people’s needs. The data included the effectiveness of networking and mentorship in nursing, which are the main methods of maintaining knowledge for future generations of nursing professionals. The findings indicated that Special Interest Groups (SIG) offer members with learning, support, and educational opportunities, mentoring, networking, and allocation of resources. The findings showed that NP SIG was effective in the field of nursing as it created a solid platform to learn and understand the key issues affecting nursing professional.
This study utilized participant action research as the methodology since it suited the nursing practice setting. The methodology included a cyclic process of planning, observing, acting, and reflection to achieve the intended results. Participants in the research were Nurse Practitioner candidates and nurses who had to be actively involved in the NP SIG. Those who did not meet the criteria were never invited as the main objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of NP SIG in supporting people. The sample group was small to protect participants’ confidentiality, clinical specialty, and demographic information. The sample group was asked questions in accordance with the ethical requirements. Overall, the findings indicated that SIG provides individuals with support and educational opportunities. From the findings, the SIG meets the expectations of nursing professional as it creates a platform for members to understand the criterion to performing the assigned duties and responsibilities.
After a meticulous review of the literature, the study highlighted that the idea of mentoring in nursing is significant in that it facilitates the transition of nursing advancement. Mentoring is crucial as it creates an opportunity to learn from role models or experts. With this in mind, mentoring is an essential means of offering support and guidance for clinicians. This article concurs that mentorship generates career advancement and knowledge transfer to future generations.
How This Issue Relates to Advanced Nurse Practitioner (APN)
It is pertinent to note that, Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) are increasingly evolving to meet the demanding needs of nursing care delivery. With this, it is important for the ANP to comprehend the environment there are in and establish the need to augment support to rural communities. When the above research indicates the effectiveness of the Nurse Practitioner Special Interest Groups (NIP SIG), it creates a solid platform for ANP to articulate the importance of mentoring and supporting in nursing professional. This research allows the ANP to comprehend their environment and understand the road to success. For example, it motivates ANP to mentor other members for future nursing advancement. With this in mind, it is the ANP duty to understand the norms and regulations of nursing professional and tactfully educate other members towards a healthy lifestyle change. As indicated in the article, a nurse practitioner should diligently work hard to understand patients’ specific needs. In doing, they conduct medical exams and family history in order to perform diagnostic tests.
It is important to acknowledge that, job growth in the healthcare continues to grow at a high rate. With this in mind, the role of nurse practitioner cannot be underestimated in that the role does not only possess the aspect to diagnose and treat patients, but to have a strong background in nursing. Thus far, the above article relates to this issue in that it creates a platform for ANP to understand their roles and responsibilities in nursing. In facts, ANP works in wide variety settings such as health departments, nursing homes, health clinics, universities and schools, health care agencies, and health clinics. Following this, it is the duty of the ANP job to comprehend the norm for the nursing professional and tactfully educate others towards promoting a healthy lifestyle change.
Proposed Resolution to Overcome the Challenge or Advance the ANP Role
Typically, ANP should provide leadership in implementing, developing, and evaluating interventions that promote the highest quality of health care delivery. They should prepare other nurses to act as agents of change in the health care setting by promoting cost and quality effective impact. They should provide mentorship to both patients and fellow colleagues. When treating patients, the ANP should provide adequate mentorship and educational support. As indicated in the above article, the group is very active in mentoring and supporting patients. The Nurse Practitioner Special Interest Group (NP SIG) provides its members with mentoring, allocation of resources, networking, educational and learning opportunities, and support. This is in accordance with ANP who should diligently anticipate change in the healthcare industry. In doing, they should work hand in hand with other agents of change such as SIG to augment a positive change in the health care industry. To sum up, ANPs should be good role models for their patients and the entire community. They should be role models both in their conduct and lifestyles.
