Format for the report:
a) A typed report, 1.5 line spacing, 1000 words.
b) The report is not directly a subject based essay. That is Assignment 6.
c) The report is an account of how you have worked with issues in writing through EL17720 and how you have used or adapted advice for other modules you have been studying.
d) The report is a piece of academic writing so it should be formal in style even though it works with reflection on personal development.
e) The report should have the following sections. It is not necessary to answer all of the questions indicated here. They provide a guide to the type of things you can discuss in the report. It is better to be specific about a limited number of issues than to be too general about a lot of issues.
1) Introduction (approx. 100 words)
The introduction should provide a brief overview of the report.
• What types of essays have you been (or will you be) working on in your own department (e.g. European Languages, Computer Science, Management and Business)?
• Which specific writing issues from EL17720 have you used or adapted (or will you use or adapt) to work with those essays?
• How has this information informed your own needs and/or development in writing?
2) Specific writing topics you have worked on in your other modules (350-400 words)
This should present a profile of one specific essay topic and the expectations of the department setting the task. Alternatively, you can compare/contrast two topics. Do not include more than two topics.
(Students who have not written essays in their department yet may choose to analyse a question from the department and the expectations on how you would write an essay about that topic.)
• Which specific topic/topics did you work on (or analyse)?
• What were the departmental requirements of the writing tasks you worked with (or analysed)?
• Did you receive any specific guidelines or advice on how to interpret and write about those topics or did you base your choices on previous experience of writing?
• What aspects of writing development did you (will you) face when writing the essay/essays?
3) Specific issues developed through EL17720 (or researched independently as a result of the module) (350-400 words)
• Which issues discussed in the module have informed your understanding of writing issues? Refer to specific seminars and bibliographic resources. Include the seminar citations in the text, e.g. (EL17720, seminar 7 notes).
• If you do refer to ideas from seminar notes, check the citations and bibliography in each. Many of the ideas are paraphrased or quoted from other authors—and those citations and references should be in your bibliography where relevant.
• How do they compare with the way you have worked in previous language and communication settings (if this is relevant to your experience as a student)?
• How have you used or adapted these issues to meet your current needs in writing essays?
• How has this helped or hindered your ability to work with the requirements set by your department (you can refer to ideas mentioned in section 2)?
• Will you be able to use these issues to inform future writing assignments either in English or in your own language?
4) Conclusion (50-100 words)
A brief summary of what was discussed in the report and the main implications for your own writing development.
