Reflective report of learning outcomes as it applies to ethics in information technology

Learning ethics in information technology has been exciting. Ethics is a very important area in information technology. The moral codes govern how information technology operates. Ethics in information technology is concerned about how it functions and how it governs human conduct. The paper is a reflection on the learning outcomes concerning ethics in information technology.

Learning outcomes

Ethics in information ethics was a very interesting subject among other subjects that I did.  I was able to understand what ethics is and how it affects  information technology. I was also able to grasp various ethical considerations that are required to ensure that any information technology adopted should have. The course also widened my scope on various factors that leads to failure to adhere to ethical standards by many organizations and how this affects the functioning and performance of information technologies.

This learning experience has impacted my understanding on ethical issues in various ways.  When I was introduced to this topic, I did not understand what ethics were and could not connect and understand how it was important in information technology.  I was able to understand what ethics was and why it was important to understand how it functions to ensure that it impacted positively on the organization. Information technology is growing at a fast pace and at the same time, there are many ethical issues that are cropping up that are important to understand or handle them amicable in order to ensure that the organization that adapts to such information technology benefits and achieves their objectives.

I must acknowledge the fact that I have gained a deeper understanding of what ethics is and how it relates to information technology. For the matter of fact, I am able to respond to situations that entails issues of ethical dimensions in information technology perfectly. I believe that, I am able to identify situations that require application of ethics and provide some insight on the way forward. For instance,   information systems such as networks used by an organization should be configured putting in consideration ethical standards.  In their configuration, the goals and the mission of the organization should be manifested.  For instance,   unnecessary information such as phonographic materials should not be placed on such networks (Kenneth & Herman, 2008). They should also be configured in away that no person can be able to access to confidential information. These are some of the issues that must be investigated to ensure that the technologies do not breach codes of conducts and uphold to ethical standards.

There are different issues in our lives that contribute or influence how we think and how we make our decisions. In my case, this course has greatly influenced my career in information ethics. This era where, information technology is growing at a fast pace, there are many challenges relating to ethics that are required to be addressed amicably. I have gained confidence and wide knowledge about the topic on ethics and now I believe that I have the capability and the skills to ensure that ethical standards are upheld in information technology for the benefit of the organization (Wang & Taratorin, 1999).   I believe that my career in Information technology have moved a notch higher as I am confidence that  I can improve information technology and make it even more better and appealing to all members of the society.

As we move towards globalization due to advancement in information technology, there are new changes that are anticipated that relates to ethics in information technology. Some of these challenges includes; filtering of content online. This problem is threatening online information. Some of the information, software, songs and movies are filtered without the consent of the source and this is unethical practice. Another problem or challenge is the intellectual property rights. Since the merger of intellectual property rights and information technology occurred in 1990s, there has been a problem with the ownership (Richard & Herman, 2004).  Intellectual property materials is being exchanged and reprinted on the internet without the authentication of the owner or source. This ethical issue has been experienced as globalization happens. Another ethical issues concerns email spams (Adam, 2005).  Spams are messages send blindly to many users. Some of these messages have virus and other are pornographic messages, which may send to wrong users. Social networks are other areas that have resulted to many ethical issues.  When face book came up with a program called Beacon in 2007 which could turn each users information into advertisements to allow greater amount of connectivity it did not have an opt system to allow users to participate with their own accord (Herman, 2004).  It therefore infringed on the privacy of the users raising ethical concerns. Another ethical issue concerns the security required when registering new members. However, many questions are still unanswered and therefore, raise ethical issues.

In conclusion, I must say that, the learning experiences I received from this class is overwhelming. I am now rich in skills and knowledge concerning ethics in information technology. I can now vehemently say that, I can create an information technology that encompasses all ethical issues. I received wonderful experience from the class.
