Representing the Mad King: George III in the Cinema
From the story concerning David Chandler’s, it is well analyzed showing the role played by mad King George III within the context of the cinema. The film is about the mad king and the madness of King George that took place in the year 1954. It is clear that Chandler puts more emphasis on the magnitude of acting on behalf of the mad king with the aim of giving a deeper explanation concerning the illness of the mad king. Chandler also focuses on elaborating the full meaning of the film to the audience at the time when it was acted. Between 1950s and 1990s, the story about the mad king and his son was at peak in that the health condition of mad king was at a glance. Chandler took a responsibility of highlighting the effect of the illness and the recovery of mad king brought to the nation of Great Britain. Some of the areas affected by mad king’s healthy condition included political penalty, the attitude portrayed by the citizens towards the monarchy in terms of the leadership style and the way the whole nation understood the mental illness of the king. Chandler examines how mad king was unable to rule effectively between 1988 and1988 in that his health condition prevented him from delivering to the people all that he was supposed to perform as a king. Many questions were raised especially when his eldest son was estranged from the king. The opposition group allied to Wales took this as an advantage to undermine mad king with the fact that he was unfit to rule. The people of Great Britain especially the opposition side, had confidence in Wales terming him as the one who will bring severe change in the Great Britain. The people of Great Britain had lost hope in change basing on what was happening on the ground. On the other side, the common citizen viewed George III as very mad as compared to his father. This is clearly indicated in the first film to be acted by the name, Beau Brummell. In the film, Prince Wales the king’s eldest son, is portrayed as the main character playing a big role in the film. It is shown how George III took an advantage over the princes in that he mistreated and abused him despite the fact that Wales was a king’s son. The story becomes more interesting when the story of Prince Wales is more analyzed on the fact that he was to marry unfit woman. It was challenging and contradicting especially to Wales since it was hard for him to decide which way to go. During the time when Beau Brummell was being acted, Chandler suggests that the psychological issues faced by the king might have been due to the mental illness. At the end of the film, it can be analyzed with deeper concern in that the mental illness of mad King was due to porphyria. According to physician point of view, porphyria is a kind of illness that affects the nervous system thereby preventing an individual from performing his/her duties effectively. The mad king was believed to be suffering from the same as indicated with his physical appearance ( Adams, p. 45).
It is evident that, the main reason why Beau Brummell was written was to draw the attention of the audience towards the side of the princes. The princes became popular at the end of the film implying that many people had an interest in his personality especially those ones in opposition of mad king.
