Write a paper based on your attempt to go without media for seventy-two hours. Whether or not you succeeded in this attempt, you should have learned something from it. What do you think you learned from this experiment about yourself, others, and our media society? As you go through your deprivation, pay close attention and take notes on your response, as well as the responses of others around you. Be aware that the essay portion of the assignment is not just a chronological account of what happened. You will need to use critical sources (e.g. Arthur Berger and other essays we’ve used in class), and you want to organize the essay around your thesis, in other words, what you believe this assignment taught you about yourself, others, and the media. Did the experiment show you to be more dependent on the media than you thought? Why or why not? Were some forms of media harder to do without than others—which ones and why? Did you find out that you use them in certain social situations—where, when, and why? Based on your personal experience and research, what sort of conclusions can you reach about yourself, others, and society?
