A Speculative essay on the decline in the circulation of Newspapers
For the better half of the 20th century, easiest way to keep one informed with the affairs of the day was by perusing through the pages of a newspaper. Here, one could (and still can find political news, sports, job listings, obituaries and any other news item that might be of interest). Manufacturers and the media houses alike took advantage of this attention through the business of advertising. However as of today the sales of these daily publications is on the decline (Franklin 306).
There are two main interlinked factors that have led to this. For one, today’s market is highly customer-oriented and second technological advancements in communication. A customer-oriented market demands customized products that suite customer wants and needs. Newspapers are highly objective in that they have a wide target and this may fail to capture a particular customer preference. Technological advancements have made the internet accessible to a large number of people and this means they can follow whatever story they are interested in in real time. The two factors are completely interrelated as they serve to complement each other in a manner that could only be likened to a well-orchestrated conspiracy. This is because like newspapers, they bridge the gap between news items and people; the only difference is that with electronic gadgets, this experience is greatly enhanced for the end user (Cochrane et al).
The mainstream media, of which the newspapers are part of, has also contributed to this slow death of the newspaper by their action of going online. With an increased number of computer tablets such as the iPad being introduced, it appears that the fall in the number of people purchasing newspapers will only continue albeit in an increasing fashion (Franklin, 307; Perez, 13).
