The attitudes towards work

Describe how typical the attitudes that Sheehy reports appear to be in work environments you have experienced.

The attitudes towards work have incurred a drastic transformation over the recent times. One of the typical attitudes that Sheehy reports is the attitude towards information age jobs as of high discretion that requires intense decision making skills for the workers. In such a working environment, there are greater opportunities for workers to express themselves and these results in a redefinition of work ethics. In a working environment characterized by high discretion, the work ethics is of more importance and value than in a working environment where workers perceive the job as of low discretion. The low discretion workers are mostly union members with majority in blue collar jobs where the working environment in most cases is noisy and dirty.

Another attitude towards work as described by Sheehy is that work is viewed as good and through working one is able to reward himself. Most workers therefore attempt to gain satisfaction in their work and also success. In majority of the workplaces, many workers aim at achieving self satisfaction and success through working, with this ideology, the work ethics have been redefined over time. Worker satisfaction is achieved through autonomy; most workers want to exercise control over their jobs and exercise a sense of empowerment.

Many present workers are against the authoritarian style of management. They want to be involved in decision making process; they prefer the scientific style of management where the work is self directed. Another common attitude is that workers are self- starters and they don’t agree to the principle of working under close supervision.

Impatience is also another common attitude among the workers of the information age, especially if progress is not witnessed over a short duration.

Explain the implications of the work ethic Sheehy describes for the future of American business.

The shift in the perception of work ethics will have adverse effects on the future of American businesses since majority of American businesses completely depend on human labor provided by the employers.

The shifts in perception of work ethics will help to foster employee relations with the employer. The authoritarian mode of management will no longer be helpful as people as people are will be used to a more self-directed approach during work.

In the new work ethics employees attempt to gain self empowerment and be successful in whatever they will be doing, this will be a healthy approach for many businesses in America due to a set of devoted employees whose aim is to see the company scale to greater heights.

Explain whether it is more reasonable to expect workers, especially in a capitalist society, to be more devoted to their jobs, more concerned with quality and customer service, than Sheehy coworkers were.

In a capitalist society, investment and means of trade is basically done by individuals and private corporations implying that it is a free economy. Employees in a capitalist society are devoted to their jobs and are more concerned with the quality and customer service because capitalism system of administration is based on recognition of individual rights, there fore under capitalism, employees will be more devoted to getting the job done in the right way because at the end of it, their individual rights will be put into consideration.

In a capitalist society, everybody has the free will to own property and the government does not have control over them, and the status of someone is measured by how rich one is. With this kind of motivation, majority of employees will have to work their level best to ensure that a social status is achieved. In a capitalist environment, people are of the notion that there are no freebies; one must work hard to get what he needs and this makes the employees to be committed to their work so as to earn money which will have to boost their social status.

Explain the reasoning behind employee theft.

Employee theft is stealing or misusing of one’s employers assets without prior directive from the employer to do so. It is a crisis facing many business organizations. Employee theft can be in terms of money, theft of time, theft of supplies and stealing of the company’s merchandise and property.

One of the major reasons that facilitate employee theft is the recent tough economy. With the need to satisfy their basic needs during these economically tough times, employees have no other option but are forced to steal from their work places. With the economic crunch, salaries are being reduced and   therefore they go home with less money which is not enough to cater for their daily needs; they therefore resort to stealing to make ends meet.

Another explanation for employee theft is because of the loopholes in management of the business or company; many steal because the opportunity to do so presented itself and an employee will steal from the company or business organization if the probability of getting caught is minimal.

Employee theft sometimes is primarily due to the reason that the employee feels some form of mistreatment from the company for example poor working terms and conditions and poor salary payments which sometimes delay. Employee theft is basically due to management issue than the issue of employer trying to meet his ends.

Another explanation for employee theft is lack of control over inventory by the business organization. Most businesses lack preventive measures and this presents opportunity for employees to steal.

Other reasons why employees primarily steal from their employers is that punitive measures and policies regarding employee theft. If there are no punishments to cases of employee theft, theft will continue because the employees will think they won’t be punished.

Explain ways the culture of our capitalists society encourages attitudes like those Sheehy describes.

Capitalism is consistent with human behavior; one must work in order to survive. As long an opportunity presents itself, one must make sure that he works his best to achieve the social status. This philosophy of life among the capitalists makes people to develop an attitude of self satisfaction towards work.

In capitalist society, those who don’t work or participate in any activity are culled out; therefore individuals tend to do their best in order to avoid being removed from the society. This instills a spirit of hard work among the workers in order to avoid being expelled.
