Assignment Guidelines
• Your first draft for October 28 should be seven pages long, double-spaced, and include a
developed thesis statement.
• The final essay you submit on November 4 should include 7-9 pages of text (notes and
headers additional), in double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font, with 1” margins. 7-
9 pages of text means that your essay concludes on or after the final line of page 7, but does
not extend onto a 10th page.
• Use quotes judiciously and purposively. This is particularly important for block quotes. Only
reference the words/phrases/sentences/passages that pertain directly to the point you are
trying to prove in that paragraph. Paraphrase the author’s ideas whenever the exact wording
or phrasing is not crucial to your point.
• Include a first-page header with your name, the name of the class, the name of the
assignment, and the due date; a header on all additional pages with your last name; and a
footer on each page with the page numbers.
• Provide MLA-format citations and bibliography for all sources, included Silko’s novel.
