The One-Minute Manager

The One-Minute Manager

The book The One Minute Manager by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson was first published in 1981 by morrow publishers. Blanchard is a PhD holder in education administration and leadership. This book is mostly based on business management. The features on the cover make it attractive too. It costs an average of $13 and its ISBN is 0688014291, 9780688014292. The authors have mainly concentrated on management in the business field as far as this book is concerned. The main aim of the authors was to enable managers working with teams or groups achieve great results within a short time. This was written because many managers were having a hard time managing teams and groups and achieving the desired results.

As one reads the book, the author gives practical techniques and general information, which can be used by any manager. This book belongs to the educational genre. The authors use a formal of writing this book, the words are use correctly and the technical words used in the book are explained further. The main ideas of the authors are organized into three major topics, which are explained further in order to enable the reader to get a better understanding. Unlike other books, the authors in this book go directly to the point and do not keep repeating themselves in order to create volume. This explains why such a good book only has 111 pages. I elate with the book especially as one who aspires to become a business management. It gives strategies that can be used in a day-to-day basis. I would recommend this book to anybody because the authors have used terms that can be understood by anybody and have written practical workable information. The book is also cheap.

The main theme in this book is achieving great results as a business manager. The authors’ thesis statement is receiving great results as a manager without taking a lot of time (p.22). This has been shown using three ways, i.e. having one-minute goals, one-minute praising and one-minute reprimands. The authors start the book by telling a story of young man who seeks to learn the productive and efficient techniques of how to manage people. The authors continue and further explain how to develop the one-minute goals, praising and reprimands. As mentioned earlier, the authors in this book are more interested in delivering the main points without beating around the bush and so the points are laid out in a chronological order. This makes the book quite a quick read.

The authors’ argument on first having meetings (that take a minute) and setting goals that should stated down in short statements, is quite logical and have been proved by many book reviewers as having worked for them in achieving quick satisfying results in their position as managers. Praising the staff (which takes a minute) and telling them about their performances helps the employees to be more open with the manager and with the work, they are doing. Reprimanding the employees (which also takes a minute) helps the manager to be honest with the employees. The employees are able to know their weaknesses and mistakes and how to correct them. This book is different from the other books for it addresses the shot-term goals, which help the manager achieve the long-term goals. It addresses this by going directly to the point.

Both authors, Blanchard and Johnson are professionals in administration. Blanchard is a PhD holder in education administration and leadership and Johnson is a M.D holder from Royal College of Surgeons and the chairperson in Spencer Johnson Partners. Blanchard has written other works including Increasing Effectiveness through Situational Leadership, while Johnson has written who moved My Cheese? The authors have used both primary and secondary sources as their references. This has enabled the readers get a view fro both sides. One can only conclude that this is one of the managerial books, which should be recommended to anyone. This is because it goes to the point, has an easy and understandable language and the technical terms used have been explained further. The authors are to be trusted foe they have the desired credentials and have practical experience in this field. The secrets given can also be used by those running small businesses to those running huge corporations.
