This term paper is quite open-ended as long as it is focused on Chinese communication and media. The following is my preliminary proposal for this paper, which you can modify if you see fit. Moreover, you can write something entirely different from what I propose if you feel the idea you think of is better.
My proposal:
Use political economic framework and textual analysis to examine the current phenomenon in Chinese television landscape where there is an explosion of Chinese reality TV shows. More specifically, the Chinese versions of Korean reality TV shows involving modification and adaptation to fit in Chinese context. To talk about the interplay between Chinese party-state, the Chinese domestic market, and transnational capital. The Chinese version of “Running Man” could be discussed as a case study among all the other Chinese adaptations of Korean reality shows.
The articles in the additional materials column may be useful for you as references.
Apart from those articles, the following two articles are very helpful and important regarding to this paper. They are:
Zhu, Ying, “Chinese Television Drama as art, political discourse, and transnational capital,” in Television in Post-Reform China
Sun, Wanning and Yuezhi Zhao, “Television Culture with ‘Chinese Characteristics’: The Politics of Compassion and Education,” in Graeme Turner and Jinna Tay (eds.), Television Studies after TV: Understanding Television in the Post-Broadcast Era (London: Routledge, 2009), pp. 96-104.
