Variety Selection

Yield assessment
• Pick a trial site which is local for you. How has your variety performed in this trial over the past several years, and is this performance consistent across years?
• Is this performance reflected in the long term data which has been compiled from many trial sites?
• Discuss the usefulness of using one year of trial data to select varieties?
Variety limitations
• What diseases could potentially cause problems for this variety? When looking at the disease ratings, it may also be useful to compare your variety with others to see how it ranks, as there may be little resistance in any available variety to some diseases (eg crown rot). As a guide, R means no problems, MR-MS means a little to moderate yield loss, while S–VS means large yield losses if the disease occurs and it isn’t managed.
• What other limitations does this variety have? Examples may include lodging susceptibility, short coleoptile length, or quality issues such as susceptibility to sprouting, low test weight, high screenings, etc.
What are the quality specifications of this variety, how are they influenced, does it receive premiums or discounts for various grades, how do they affect the marketability of the variety?
• Would you use this variety if the sowing time was much earlier and much later?
Use Yield Prophet to determine frost and heat stress risks for your main season sowing time, and for sowing 3 weeks earlier, and 4 weeks later than this time. If your variety is not listed in Yield Prophet, choose another variety from the DPI sowing guide with similar maturity that is listed in Yield Prophet.
Breeding, ownership, and marketing
• Does this variety have PBR or EPR, who owns this variety and who manages the royalties?
• If there are levies/royalties on this variety, how much does the grower have to pay?
• What group bred the variety, and what year was it released/commercialised?
• Are there any constraints on the marketing of the grain by the farmer?

Part 2
Outline how the Plant Breeders Rights and End Point Royalties system operates with crop varieties used for grain production, and outline the reasons why they were introduced.
