The relationship analysis paper is an interpersonal communication exercise designed to help you realize the importance of your communication style and various influences on your relationships.
PURPOSE
1. To apply interpersonal communication theories and concepts to your life
2. To analyze your communication behaviors and discover ways to improve them
3. To increase your awareness of how you influence and are influenced by others
PROCEDURE
1. Select an intimate relationship with a person with whom you have a high degree of commitment, trust, interdependence, disclosure, and affection. Protect the identity of the person by giving him/her a different name. Give the analysis an attractive title to capture the essence of the relationship, such as, “A Glance at a Second Chance,” “My Bowling Ball is Cracked”, etc… Exclude blood relatives and in-laws. However, the relationship can be current or past, as long as you have a way to collect information by systematic recall, interviews, letters and emails, photos saved, or phone calls.
2. Concepts and terms from the textbook must be used and properly documented when writing your paper.
OUTCOME
The final outcome of this activity is a critical analysis of the relationship. It should be 6-8 pages, typed, with standard 1-inch margins, 12-point font, and double spaced. It should not be a running description of events. It should be a descriptive analysis of communication patterns and their significance to the initiation, development, maintenance, and dissolution of the relationship life cycle. A suggested organization scheme for the analysis paper is as follows:
INTRODUCTION
I. Description of the relationship
II. Why was it important for you to analyze this particular relationship
III. The methodology of information collection
BODY OF ANALYSIS
I. Relationship Initiation: gather information about each other, where and how the initial meeting(s) taken place, and the cause of attraction between the two of you. …
II. Relationship Development: sharing of activities, personal information, common language, future orientation, dependence on each other for favors and support, and increasing communication time, and etc…
III. Relationship Maintenance: keeping the relationship at a particular level of closeness or intimacy by spending time together, merging social networks, making sacrifices, and being forgiving…
IV. Relationship Dissolution: (1) the recognition of dissatisfaction; (2) the process of disengaging, and (3)ending.
CONCLUSION AND EVALUATION
I. What have you learned from this analysis about human relationships in general?
II. What have you learned from this analysis about the general health of this particular relationship?
III. What are your/your partner’s strengths and weaknesses in relation to promoting positive communication climate, self-disclosure, listening, assertiveness, and conflict management?
IV. If you had a chance to redo this analysis again, what would you do to make this analysis better?
Hello, I have to write about my relationship with my girlfriend Emily. I have already written a pre-paper about what my essay would be about. I have to include that I have been with her for 6 years and that we have weird nick names such as “Punkin” and yes that’s Punkin with an “N” (Don’t ask). I have also chosen a title for my paper “Two punkin’s in a pod”. I’m thinking all you would have to do is write about a relationship that you have had and sub there names for her name “Emily”.
