Background:

2 In an excerpt from his book, Calkins promoted the tricks of advertising as a sign of

social advancement.

6 Bruce Barton’s famous work argued that modern ideas of advertising fit in with

traditional Christian values.

7 The study on Middletown, one of the first sociological studies on American life,

mapped out the effects of modernization on a small town in Muncie, Indiana.

There are assigned readings from Michael Johnson’s Reading the American Past.
