Wireless Security
The article by David Mielach 8 Ways to Prevent Data Breach addresses the challenge facing many small companies. It is becoming increasing clear that most companies are not taking the necessary steps to safeguard their data, which might lead to unparalleled consequences for the companies and their clients. The writer provides evidence to support the claims that data breach is a reality in modern companies.
Wireless security involves the prevention of unauthorized access to files of ones’ network by using various protocols. These protocols encrypt information to enable enhanced protection from interception by hackers or crackers. Hackers or crackers have been a potential threat in the security of information. Many companies have suffered great losses because of hacking, although as Mielach argues, some companies do not believe they their data is under threat. However, evidence points to growing cases of attacks. An example is Hess who was a spy recruited by the KGB (Holt and Schell, 2010) to hack into US computers and accessed very confidential information. Indeed, hacking is a great threat to security, which is very detrimental to a company. The information hacked may also be used to blackmail the company or be used against it in promoting undue competition (Angelescu, 2010). The company may also lose financially because some hackers may hack into back accounts and lead to great losses in banks as the hackers transfer the money electronically to their bank accounts subtly. Hence, from the above examples, it is important to improve or enhance wireless security to prevent such cases from arising. The protocols are many and have various advantages and disadvantages (Osterhage, 2011). Wireless security is paramount to the protection of files on ones computer, especially those computers that use wireless network. They are many security protocols that entail wireless security. These are WAP, WEP protocols. Some of these protocols are not effective in protecting the computer from being hacked or the password from being cracked.
Wireless security uses security protocols like WPA to encrypt information (Angelescu, 2010). This ensures that key used by the networks is not been tempered with. This prevents unauthorized intrusion into the network. WPA is of two categories, which are WPA and WPA2. WPA2 is better because it gives users different keys to use (Vacca, 2012). Wireless security involves the protection of computers from malicious attacks or damages caused by hackers or intruders. The intrusion usually takes place when there is a flaw in the security system of a company’s computer security. Hackers have been known all over the world to break into various systems involving computers. They use codes to enter or intercept a network (Vacca, 2012). They may steal passwords or other files that are in the information systems in computers. The crackers have found an easy avenue in wireless networks. The passwords may thus be compromised or changed to suit the hacker’s purpose.
Wired equivalent privacy is another protocol used in the security of computers by encrypting the data sent between computers. It is not preferable because it ahs been an easy target by crackers. Another protocol is 802.1 protocols. This protocol works with other security protocols like WEP and WPA, which is Wi-Fi protected access. It is mostly applicable to network situations (Angelescu, 2010). Thus, data is given a unique identity by the various keys and this mostly prevents the compromising of this data. Wireless security is thus an important issue concerning data.
Hacking has been identified as a problem in most wireless networking systems as this may give access to very confidential information of the company and thus produce a breach in the security of the company. Many hackers have developed programs that can bypass security protocols and enable one to gain access to information or the unauthorized use of the internet in an organization (Boyce, 2011). The knowledge of the above methods that regard using of protocols is thus important. People need to be knowledgeable on these matters. This enables a company to be safe instead of adopting apologetic stance when tings have gone awry.
Routers are usually used in securing of networks. A router is therefore important in increasing security of a wireless network. One has to activate router security to prevent any unauthorized access (Clarke, 2010). Therefore, people should be knowledgeable on the issues of network security. Hackers have developed many techniques of hacking into networks by using soft wares of various kinds. The hackers usually aim at intrusion and thus a company has to use better systems in protecting its confidential data and information.
Wireless security is important in keeping a company’s security intact (Vacca, 2012). The company needs to look into security and ensure that it maintains security to an optimum level. The company has to manage its security to prevent consequences that may arise if the data is compromised (Clarke, 2010). Some data is sensitive and thus needs to be secured at all costs, including locking and securing sensitive customer, patient, and employee data (Mielach, 2012). Most of the data that should be carefully secured is that of the citizens of a country. The hackers might use gathered information to steal. For instance, hackers could use their credit card information to steal from client’s account. In the article, one way of securing data is by using firewalls to control any access to the company’s data, thus locking out hackers (Mielach, 2012).
Further research needs to be done on the issue of computer security to prevent the areas ever-increasing hacking cases. Websites should develop methods that prevent intrusion and show any suspicious activity that is similar to hacking. As technology develops so to hackers, develop their methods. They come up with softwares that bypass security of company or personal computers. There, ways that are more effective need to be sought so that the companies may prevent the danger of hacking. Governments need to pass legislation to prevent the incidents of hacking. Most networks provide should research and get to know the methods that hackers use to hack into websites.
The future protection methods are as outlined above. These methods are the use of protocols like WPA and WAP. The increase in the speed of the internet and many wireless hot spots in various countries pose the threat of hacking and compromise of data and information. Thus, the future is rife with many cases of hacking if awareness is not spread in many countries that have adopted wireless networks. Therefore, it is important to take into consideration the security of wireless networks and come up with counter hacking technologies that will prevent easy entry into wireless networks. Moreover, the issue of insurance as proposed by Mielach could go a long way in recovering any loss occasioned by security breach.
