Assignment description:
Write a 5-6 page paper that compares and contrasts the process of class formation for two (2) of the following four (4) groups of people in the 19th and early 20th centuries: African Americans, Mexican Americans, Chinese Americans, and European Americans.
The paper must draw upon all assigned readings for the topics discussed. For example, a paper that compares the class formation of African Americans with that of Mexican Americans must draw upon all assigned readings for weeks 2 and 3 of the course. The paper may draw from course lecture and class discussions, as needed, but is not required to do so. Students may but are not encouraged to draw from sources outside of class when writing the paper.
The papers format should have: an original argument based in contrasting the experience of two groups of people; an introductory paragraph that includes the papers argument, as well as a brief roadmap of the evidence that the paper will use to prove the argument; paragraphs that begin with and are organized around topic sentences; and numerical endnotes (not footnotes) formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style used to cite all sources used for the paper. Do not provide a bibliography, as the proper use of endnotes makes it redundant.
The paper should be a minimum of four and a half (4 1?2) pages, double spaced, with one inch margins, using a 12 point font. It may be as long as six (6) full pages.

To assist students with developing their arguments, part of class on Monday, May 1 will be spent going over how to develop a specific and demonstrable thesis statement for a paper, and discussing various themes and topics that student papers may explore. We will also briefly discuss how to insert numerical endnotes into documents using word processing software.
Students may email the instructor before May 4 if they would like the instructor to provide feedback on draft introductory paragraphs before writing their full papers.
Avoiding Plagiarism
To avoid plagiarism, the paper should cite all sources used, not just sources quoted. Students may apply insights they first developed in their primary source papers, and may analyze the same quotes from primary sources that they analyzed in their primary source papers, but may not use verbatim passages from their own previous writing to complete this assignment.
Basically choose groups and talk about what type of citizenship restrictions they had, how did they react to it, their working conditions, gender roles, how feminism/masculinity was seen as, the jobs they had, their pay, how they were segregated….these are some things you can use to compare them.
