application document assignment

Here are the details:

Part One

Use at least one of the job search strategies discussed in Chapter 5 (153-57) to find a listing on which to base your documents.

  • ♣ You may choose an opening that would be suitable as your next job, such as summer employment or a position further up your current employer’s food chain.
  • ♣ You may decide to use this assignment as a practice run for your first post-degree job, which may require some “stretching” of the information included on the resume and letter.
  • ♣ Avoid the “dream job” approach, unless it’s already within reasonable reach based on your experience and education.

If the listing is limited in terms of information you might do additional research on your potential employer to get a clearer sense of their expectations, and find a specific individual to whom you’ll be addressing the application letter.

Part Two

Write a letter of application and resume geared toward the listing you’ve chosen, emphasizing the experience and skills that would be most marketable given the information you have about the position/employer.

The letter should reflect the concepts addressed in Chapter 4, with the content providing elaboration on key resume items while emphasizing the “you” attitude. Your tone should avoid suggesting you are either pompous/arrogant or desperate.

The resume should exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Format– organized chronologically or by function/skill depending upon its contents/emphasis (172-73); visually appealing and easily readable.
  • Content– appropriate, relevant details using active voice (161); an honest reflection (or at least a reasonable projection) of your current skills, education and achievements.

Drafts of your letter and resume must be distributed (as copies, or through email) to your group members by the start of class Tuesday, September 30th, for group feedback.

The application document is worth 50 points.
