Aims of the Module

 

By examining contemporary management issues in depth, students will gain an understanding of current management thinking from both practical and theoretical perspectives. The purpose of the module is to synthesize all previous learning by exploring the boundaries of the management discipline. Not only does this help inform the Research Project module (MM35020) but also offers an insight into what students may face if they decide to continue with their studies at the postgraduate level.

 

Brief description

 

This module is designed to develop and augment the knowledge and understanding of management research addressed in the core management modules. It will consist of a series of self-contained lectures given by a range of staff and PhD candidates from across the school, each highlighting a topical or emergent issue in management research.

 

 

 

Learning Outcomes

 

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

* Perform a focused literature search into specific areas of management theory;

* Identify several key developments at the frontiers of management theory;

* Critically evaluate these developments in management theory;

* Communicate an understanding of these developments in written form;

* Demonstrate critical self-reflexive learning;

* Discuss and defend their own perspective on contemporary and pervasive management issues.

This module will consist of various contemporary subjects from different management fields.  Some of the classes are as shown below but not limited to:

Management of Product Development

Strategic Human Resource Management

Leadership vs. Management in the 21st Century

Diversity Management

Entrepreneurship

 

 

 

Semester Assessment 1 – 100% share of marks available in semester 2

 

Literature review

 

The first assignment of this semester will be based on a contemporary issue that is selected by students within Operations Management, Innovation Management, Human Resource Management or Strategic Management. Students need to write a literature review to identify the gaps/issues/problems within a specific area. This assignment has to include in-depth examinations of minimum five interrelated academic peer-reviewed articles within your study. The selected articles must be written in a narrative format where examined literatures are critically written together. Students need to define the scope of the study by focusing on a certain area and issue. Please refer to the marking criteria to see all the required elements of this assignment.

 

Deadline: 04.04.2014

Required number of words: 2500 ± 10%

Submission must be in Hard Copy and via Safe Assign

 

It is also compulsory to submit a copy of your work via Safe Assign (see module page on Blackboard, under assignments). your submission is considered incomplete until you have submitted both in hard copy and via safe assign

 

Penalties for late submission of assessments

 

This is the policy on Penalties for Late Submission which will apply across all of the University from session 2012/13. Deadlines for written work are taken seriously. Students need to manage their time responsibly so that they can submit work on time.

 

  • Assessments must be submitted to the Department according to individual departmental requirements and published deadlines.

 

  • Work submitted after the deadline will be awarded a zero.

 

  • A resit will be allowed in Part One if the module is failed overall, but will not be allowed in Part Two.

 

Submission through the medium of Welsh

 

Whilst all students can submit through the medium of Welsh please be aware that if the class tutor/lecturer is not fluent in Welsh then the work will be translated into English before marking.

 

Special circumstances

 

Students must consult their departments’ published procedures for assessments that are unavoidably submitted late. Special Circumstances will normally only be considered on the following grounds, with appropriate supporting documentation:

 

  • Illness
  • Severe personal/family problems (e.g. family bereavement)

 

The following will not be considered as Special Circumstances:

 

  • Computer failure (you should ensure adequate backups)

 

  • Printer queues (you should manage your time better)

 

  • Lack of access to resources (better planning will ensure this does not happen)

 

  • Illness for which a medical certificate is not available

 

  • Poor time management

 

  • More than one deadline on the same day

 

  • Inability to answer question or struggling with the material

 

  • Crisis Games, Performance Productions, or Departmental study trips

 

  • Non-academic activities
