Analyse the impact of career barriers to female workers in China Construction Bank, Shanghai Branch

Proposal:

Topic:  Analyse the impact of career barriers to female workers in China Construction Bank, Shanghai Branch  –  The influence of *** ( one of the career barriers) to female career development

“Chinese women leaders in business” has long been a topic that widely discussed, as it is closely related to the gender equity and women’s right. This study is aimed at exploring the barriers that restrict the opportunities of Chinese female works who will never advance high enough to encounter the “glass ceiling”.

The negative perception and attitudes, disturbing factors, as well as the obstacles in women’s career, have been defined as the “glass ceiling” to female workers. These are the invisible barriers that limit women’s process towards employment equity. These are also the barriers created by a process of exclusionary practice that successfully eliminate women as candidates for higher managerial positions.

Since the latest 20 century, there have been a range of studies trying to uncover the issues about women workers. Previous studies claim that there are few differences between male and female managers in personality. Moreover, it has also been proved by previous studies that there is no significant evidence to suggest female differ from male in potential managerial capability (Bass et al; 1971), cooperation and competition (Lirtzman and Wahba, 1972) and problem- solving (Matthems, 1972). Furthermore, western women are even reported to have higher educational qualification than men. (Alban Metcalfe and Nicholson, 1984).

As a matter of fact, however, it seems that the situation in China is different from the Western world. For example, in terms of educational qualification, Chinese females have much less chance to receive higher education than male do. The number of Chinese women that have received higher education is 60% less than the male counterpart. And there is only 39% of all urban employees are female. (Guirong, 2006)

These sexual unequal has led to a variety of barriers to Chinese women’s career. This also makes it more difficult for women to achieve higher position than men. Besides, the education gap, it seems that there is something else that disturb Chinese women’s career.

Compare to emphasizing on the difference and similarity between men and women, it seems to be more important and practical to conduct a research on the negative perceptions and attitudes that exclude women from attaining higher managerial positions. While the number of Chinese women in organizations is growing, it is also an important issue to consider the conditions and quality of Chinese female’s working life, which may help to reduce pressures on women workers.

So what are the barriers to women’s career path? There are quite a few western studies that reveal some disturbing effects on women experiencing difficulties within organizations. Yet there is few study aiming at the Chinese business women. And there must be some difference between the situation in China and the western countries, as their social culture and the national identity are different.
