Choose any topic that you would like to see covered in the mainstream news media and find an image that goes along with the story angle that you would like to see an article on. The topic is totally up to you. Follow the exact format (below) for the one page release followed by a second page with a photograph that goes along with the story and has a caption and photo credit. This traditional, targeted media release must be written in the journalistic style of objectivity (3rd person, quotes, no obvious bias outside of what is said within quotes). Read the body of the sample release below for further instructions on quotes (expert and bystander), dateline, etc.
Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to write a media release that is newsworthy, written in standard conventional journalistic style of objectivity, is error free, in AP style, likely to run in the media outlet identified, and includes an image (and appropriate to article) with a photo caption and photo credit.
Format (AP STYLE)- Follow the exact format for your release shown on the next page. Where it is single spaced, you single space, where it says (ds) you DOUBLE SPACE and do not put the (ds) in your release, just double space. This is pro-forma media release writing.
Review the slides on newsworthyness, and the readings on press releases, then write your own!

(Dateline is a PLACE, not a date) – This is where you write the body of your news release. All information should be newsworthy. The contact information at the top should refer to a specific person who knows that the release was sent and will be immediately available if the reporter calls to follow-up on the story. Include quotes from high status person (expert/star/political figure/CEO) and quotes from ordinary person (bystander, customer, fan, user, etc.). Try to stick to one page, if you must go over one page, put (over) centered at the bottom of the page. When the release is complete, type ### and center it.
