Sherwood Anderson’s Adventure is the story of a woman trapped in the promise of love. Anderson tells the story of Alice, a woman who spends her life waiting for the lover she met when she was just a young girl. Ned promises to stick by her side after they make love one evening. Ned leaves town and promises to come back for her. He does not keep his promise and Alice waits for her for many years. Alice starts saving money, which she hopes she will eventually use to go to Ned. She creates a fantasy world where she will get married to Ned. As she sees it, she will save her money and help Ned save his money and by doing this, she will give him the chance of fulfilling his desire of traveling. Alice lives with this fantasy for a long time. She refuses the advances of other young men and she cannot fathom the thought of giving herself to another man. She considers herself married to Ned. It is therefore with great difficulty that she begins a gradual change. She thinks that she will forget what it means to love and have companionship of other people. Her decision to change is difficult and after she starts going out with the middle-aged man, she does not allow herself to be caught in his love. Gradually, Alice stops depending on Ned. She becomes so desperate that at one time, she is willing to sleep with the old man in the streets after she runs out of the house naked. Although Alice resigns herself to a life of loneliness, she stops depending on Ned and she stops waiting for the time when he will come back.

The story of Araby by James Joyce recounts the events in the life of a young boy living in North Richmond Street. The boys do not have many things to do around the town and they spend part of their lives observing the town’s people and engaging in play. The protagonist admires one of his sister’s playmates and he seems obsessed with her. He says that he spent every morning watching her door and following her as they went to their different schools. He creates fantasy as he allows his mind to think of the girl constantly. The narrator says that he thinks about the girl in strange places and he even mentions her name when he is praying. His obsession or love for her is so strong that he sometimes cries and he feels his heart swelling. The narrator realizes that his idea of love is not as ideal as he had envisioned it. Before the visit to the bazaar, the narrator had only envisioned beauty and love through Mangan’s sister. This changes however, when he goes to the bazaar. He becomes angry when he realizes that he has been living in disillusion. The narrator goes through a period of maturity as he experiences another kind of life. He travels on a third class train, finds the bazaar empty, and encounters people who are not as friendly as he had hoped. This experience marks a gradual change in the boy’s life.
