Social and Political Issues of Addiction

Social and Political Issues of Addiction

Drug use and addition is an issue one can never be emphatic enough given the repercussions yet an ever-increasing frequency of occurrence in the society. My knowledge on drug addition regarding effects and treatment has been acquired through both personal experience and learning forums. Initially I started as a recreational drug user but with time, I got more dependent. Luckily, I became pregnant giving me a strong compulsion to detach from the habit. My detachment from drug use was one of life’s most enlightening moments given previously I had been selling drugs in addition to using along with my ex-husband. In a brace of positivism, I am able to relate to users and addicts feeling trapped in a rut besides desiring strongly to help them recuperate.

I have learnt how drug use makes persons vulnerable to other negative incidences such as strained relations and wrong life perceptions. I was divorced in year 2006 after a period of strained marital relations with my ex-husband mainly attributable to the vice. I met my current fiancé later in the year but events took a turn mid last year when we were involved in a domestic violence incidence. His arrest was typified by revelations of drug possession and consequently use after a house search. Painful repercussions ensued where my children were taken from my custody because I did not file a restraining order from him in spite of him hitting me while I was holding our son.

Apart from detaching from the vice, refocusing one’s life after addiction is one of the most difficult periods for any recovering person. This is reference to our (my fiancé and I) struggle to obtain full custody of the children, an aspect very painful to me as the mother. Most of the times, drug use/addiction is coupled with other illegal activities such as violence and dealing thus majority of the recovered persons have criminal records. This makes them vulnerable to prejudice even though they have changed decreasing their likelihood of getting employment or solid relationships. For instance, my fiancé went to a recovery center while we collectively enrolled for domestic violence and parenting classes. We have maintained the trend for more than a year in addition to my boyfriend’s eight months of clean drug-free living. However, it has still been difficult to get full custody since I have only been granted regular unsupervised hours on weekdays and extended hours during the weekend.

Having experienced painful family disintegrations involving my children and other loved persons in my life due to drug use, am overly zealous to help other parents recuperate and detach from drug use. Consequently, they will be better placed to raise families that can be emulated in the society. Furthermore, I believe the beauty of recovery is transformation where anyone can change if inspired and provided with the right resources. Not only the curative, additionally I believe given the opportunity as a substance abuse counselor, I would focus on preventing induction of children into the vice by educating parents on reducing their exposure and vulnerability.

Lastly if drug use/addiction was curbed or totally annihilated there would be a reduction of incidences caused by drug-induced impairments such as domestic violence, molestation and other related crimes. As a substance abuse counselor, I would be part a personal change agent as I play a servitude role in community building. The opportunity to help someone else grasp a desperately needed second chance in life is presently my most important focus.
